Arts & Business Cymru: Investment Programmes 2012 - 13 / Rhaglenni Buddsoddiad 2012-13 - Arts & Business

Arts & Business Cymru is delighted to announce that its 2012-13 Investment Programmes are now open. Funded by Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Government, CultureStep and Arts & Kids Invest aim to encourage new support and grow established business engagement with the arts.

CultureStep invests in business / arts partnerships which achieve at least one of the following priorities:

· Enabling social inclusion, access and outreach;

· Enabling activity in priority areas of Wales (Community First Areas);

· Contributing to the Arts & Health agenda;

· Supporting diversity;

· Contributing to environmental regeneration;

· Promoting equal status for the Welsh Language;

· Using the arts to motivate, develop and train business’ staff;

· Providing training & development opportunities for people in the community;

· Encouraging business investment into the arts from outside Wales.

The focus of Arts & Kids Invest is firmly on children and young people experiencing disadvantage

All projects must aim to combat this disadvantage and make a real difference to young people's lives through engagement with the arts. Examples of such disadvantage includes:

· Illness, distress, abuse or neglect;

· Any kind of disability;

· Behavioural or psychological difficulties;

· Living in poverty or situations of deprivation.

The first panel of the year takes place on Monday 2 July. The deadline for applications is Monday 18 June 2012.

New Figures for Private Investment in Culture reveal contrasting fortunes for the arts world - Arts & Business

Arts & Business figures show slight overall growth in private sector investment in culture to £686m

• Business falls for the fourth year in a row to £134.2m

• Growth as Individual Giving climbs to £382.2m

• Trusts and Foundations increase to £170.3m

• New figures almost hit record high of 2007/08

• Additional falls in business support offset by growth in Trust and Foundations

• North’s share rises over the last three years whilst the South’s (excluding London) declined

• London captures 81% of all individual giving

• Heritage and museums bring in just over half of all private sector support

Arts & Business’s new figures reveal that in 2010/11, private investment in culture stood at £686 million, a 4% increase from the previous year. Since Arts & Business first started capturing this data in 1976, private investment in the arts has been following a general upward trend, which has been interrupted in recent years with decreases from various sources of investment.

• The overall private investment increase of 4% (not allowing for inflation) includes a 10% increase of trusts and foundations funding, a 6% increase of individual philanthropy, and a 7% decrease of business investment.

• The rise in Individual Philanthropy follows a decline in the previous two years, and is in line with its relatively fast-paced growth since 2001. The 6% increase brings the levels of arts philanthropy to £382.2 million, which is higher than at any point in the past.

• Business investment has fallen 7% to £134.2m. Although businesses are still committed to working with the arts, they are not hardwired to do so. Corporate money is a discretionary spend; particularly in hard times. As a result, business investment in 2010/11 is now lower than it was in 2004/05.

• Funding from trusts and foundations increased in 10/11 by 10%, and is higher than business investment for the second year in a row, thereby helping the overall moderate private investment increase. Funding from this source now accounts for 25% of the total private investment received in the sector and now stands at £170.2 million.

The search is on for the best in creative partnership as Arts & Business (A&B) Cymru launches its 19^th annual awards ceremony.

The Awards, which encourage, acknowledge and celebrate exemplary partnerships between the private sector and the arts, reflect the broad range of work undertaken by A&B Cymru across the country. The 2012 ceremony, sponsored by Valero, will take place on stage at Wales Millennium Centre on Thursday 14 June.

In addition to 10 established categories, this year for the first time, A&B Cymru is recognising the role that individuals play in supporting the arts with a Philanthropy Award. The personal generosity of individual donations is playing an increasingly crucial part in Welsh cultural life. A&B Cymru feels it is important to give this method of arts support public recognition.

They are: Carmarthen born tenor Wynne Evans, star of Go Compare’s TV advertising campaign; Ceidiog Hughes of North Wales PR company Ceidiog Communications; Christine Lewis, who was responsible for the early development of the speciality foods business for Marks and Spencer and who now sits on the boards of Artes Mundi and National Dance Company Wales; Managing Director of Maskreys Holdings and key member of A&B Cymru’s Investment Panel, Robert Maskrey; BBC Cymru Wales Director Rhodri Talfan Davies; and lecturer and Chair of Tan Dance, Clare Thomas. This high profile panel will decide which partnerships will win trophies, specially commissioned from Denbighshire based artist Jessica Lloyd Jones.

BRIEF FOR AWARD
The Arts & Business Cymru Awards exist to encourage, acknowledge and celebrate exemplary partnerships between business and the arts across Wales. A high quality and high profile event, the 19th ceremony takes place at Wales Millennium Centre on Thursday 14 June 2012.

A&B Cymru wishes to commission 10 awards which will be presented to the winners of the various categories. An all inclusive fee of £3,000 + VAT will be paid for this commission.

Only Boys Aloud at the A&B Cymru Awards 2011

For over two decades Arts & Business Cymru has worked as part of a UK wide organisation. From today, it is able to further tailor its activity to the specific needs of Wales by becoming an independent charity.

Arts & Business Cymru specialises in brokering and developing sustainable relationships between the private sector and the arts, playing a valuable role in the country’s economy. From offices in Cardiff and Llandudno, it works with businesses ranging from multi nationals to sole traders and flagship arts organisations to individual artists. It is the specialist in partnering both sectors to address issues of business growth, corporate social responsibility and staff training, development and retention.

Under the leadership of its Chief Executive, Rachel Jones, A&B Cymru has been key to the success of many arts projects. Among the most notable was the brokering of the partnership between the Principality Building Society and Only Boys Aloud. The initial sponsorship in Summer 2010 brought such benefit to both partners that it quickly grew into a substantial 3 year deal. The Choir, which engages teenagers from across the South Wales Valleys, already has 200 members and, thanks to Principality, this valuable initiative has a bright future.

A Welsh Board of Trustees has been established under the chairmanship of Huw Roberts, who chaired the A&B Cymru Advisory Committee for 2 years. Recently retired from his role as Director of Welsh Affairs at the Royal Mail, Huw has an impressive business and political network.

Other founding members of the A&B Cymru board include: Simon King, Managing Director, Core Matters; Alison Love who recently left her position as a Partner at Hugh James to set up her own business Alison Love Limited; Samantha Maskrey, Director, Present Choices and Lynne Sheehy, CSR Manager, Legal & General. Each member has supported A&B Cymru for many years through membership of the advisory committee and proactive involvement with its work.

The devolved Arts & Business Cymru is already forging ahead with new programmes of work, as well as working tirelessly to ensure that the service to all members remains unaffected during this transition.

Art @ the Senedd will begin its 12th Season on Wednesday 7 December. The initiative, which brings performance into the public area of the Assembly building, has proved extremely successful for all involved with the audience doubling in the past year alone.

The season will run from December – July and the dates are included in the attached application form. The timing of each event will change to lunchtime and each performance will last for approximately 20 minutes.

We welcome applications from arts organisations across Wales. Should you be interested, please complete and return the attached form to cymru@artsandbusiness.org.uk no later than Friday 23 September.

The best business partners of the arts in Wales have been recognised at the 2011 Arts & Business Cymru Awards ceremony

At a black-tie dinner for over 400 guests at Wales Millennium Centre, businesses ranging from a North Wales boutique hotel to Wales’ largest building society were presented with specially commissioned works of arts created by Jane Beebe.

The A&B Cymru Awards, sponsored by Chevron, acknowledge and celebrate exemplary partnerships between business and the arts across the country. North Wales based businesses were particularly successful with the Holyhead Boatyard voted by the judges as Business of the Year. The Boatyard also won a category for its long term support of Anglesey’s Ucheldre Centre. Ruthin’s Manorhaus Hotel won the Small Business category for its support of the North Wales International Music Festival.

Four other North Wales companies – Pendine Park Care Organisation, Peninsula Home Improvements, Salisbury and Company and Windpower Wales – were also shortlisted across the categories.

The Young People Award went to the Principality Building Society for its partnership with Only Boys Aloud, which engages teenage boys across the South Wales Valleys in choral singing. Only Boys Aloud won the Legal & General Arts Award for the effective way in which it has worked with Cranes of Cardiff, Edwards Coaches, John Lewis Cardiff, Principality Building Society and Spindogs to sustain and develop the initiative.

Arts & Business Cymru’s Director, Rachel Jones, said “The Awards are now in their 18th year and the range of businesses recognised demonstrates just how effective and popular arts / business partnerships continue to be. Winners from Pugh Computers of Aberystwyth to major corporations such as Admiral and Legal & General make a tangible impact on the cultural life of Wales by working with the arts in many different ways. Arts & Business Cymru launches programme to benefit future generations across Wales

Arts & Business Cymru has announced the first stage of a new programme in its portfolio of services which bring the private sector together with the arts.
Thanks to funding from the Arts Council of Wales, Arts & Kids Cymru will engage socially disadvantaged young people aged between 0-19. Examples of such disadvantage includes:

• Illness, distress, abuse or neglect
• Any kind of disability
• Behavioural or psychological difficulties
• Living in poverty or situations of deprivation

All projects, delivered by professional practitioners, will be participatory and will aim to combat disadvantage and make a real difference to young people's lives through engagement with the arts.

In order to ensure that the impact of Arts & Kids Cymru is maximised, a number of delivery methods will be developed over the coming 12-18 months. The first stage of this innovative programme, Arts & Kids Invest, will run as an open application grant-making programme with decisions made on a quarterly basis by A&B Cymru’s existing Investment Panel. The first Arts & Kids INVEST projects will be announced shortly. It is hoped that a second arm of Arts & Kids Cymru will be operational from September.

Tax proposals for budget day to encourage more giving to the arts - Arts & Business

In preparation for the budget on Wednesday (23 March), Arts & Business has prepared 5 briefing papers on various tax proposals that might encourage more tax efficient giving to the arts and cultural sector.

We are clear that the onus can never lie solely at the Treasury’s door. As Lord Aldington said to the BBC this week the tax arrangements in the UK “are more beneficial than many donors realise.”

He continued: “In this country the tax deductibility arrangements are very generous. The thing that is wrong is that nobody knows they're generous because the government has steadfastly failed to sell the message about how good the current system is.”

As well as better promoting the current system, there is much that the Government can also do in terms of simplification and clarification that would make a real difference.

But a core challenge is for both charities and donors to make better use of the current system. Only when this is achieved will we be in a strong position to persuade the Government to introduce new incentives.

Businesses and arts organisations across South & West Wales will be recognised at a special reception at the National Museum Cardiff on Wednesday 9 March. Welsh Assembly Government Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones, AM, will present Certificates of Excellence to recipients of Arts & Business Cymru’s CultureStep programme.

CultureStep invests cash into business / arts partnerships to make them stronger and more sustainable. Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the Arts Council of Wales, the programme is key to fostering and developing relationships, especially at a time of economic gloom.

Since its inception in May 2008, CultureStep has levered almost £2.3 million into the arts from business against just under £300,000 of public money spent – a return of £7.63:£1. The programme, which has invested in all 22 local authority areas of Wales, has also engaged 33,500 young people with the arts and given over 20,000 people in the community development opportunities.

Arts & Business figures reveal private investment in culture stands firm at height of recession - Arts & Business

• Overall decrease as total figure falls by 3% in real terms to £658m

• Business investment falls another 11% - third consecutive year of decrease to £144m

• Individual Philanthropy down 4% though still accounts for the majority (55%) of investment to £359m

• Trusts and Foundations overtake business investment for the first time since 2004 to £155m

Arts & Business’s new figures released today reveal that in 2009/10, private investment in culture stood at £658 million, a 3% decrease from the previous year in real terms. Since Arts & Business first started capturing this data in 1976, private investment in the arts has been following a general upward trend, which has been interrupted in the past two years with decreases from various sources of investment.

The overall private investment decrease of 3% (above inflation) is primarily driven by the large 11% decrease of business investment, but also a moderate decrease of individual philanthropy of 4%. However, this has almost been offset by a positive growth in trusts and foundations funding of 11%.

Individual Philanthropy decreased for the second year in a row, continuing the interruption of its fast-paced growth since 2001. The 4% decrease however, is slightly lower than the previous 7% decrease, bringing the levels of arts philanthropy down to £359.3 million, which is still higher than in 2007.

Business investment has fallen 11% to £144.1m. Although businesses are still committed to working with the arts, they are not hardwired to do so. Corporate money is a discretionary spend, particularly in hard times. As a result, business investment in 2009/10 is now lower than it was in 2003/04.

Trusts and foundations - Funding from trusts and foundations was the single source of private investment that increased in 09/10, by 11% therefore keeping the overall private investment decrease moderate. Funding from this source now accounts for 23% of the total private investment received in the sector and now stands at £154.6 million.

Shakespeare @ The Senedd - Arts & Business

The first Art @ the Senedd of 2011 takes place this Wednesday 19 January.

A successful partnership between Arts & Business Cymru and the National Assembly for Wales, Art @ the Senedd continues to showcase the diversity of talent which exists across Wales, with each event made possible by private sector sponsorship.

The guest performance will be given by school children who have participated in the Shakespeare Schools Festival. Pupils from Milford Haven School and Ysgol Erw’r Delyn will present extracts from two Shakespeare plays in front of an audience of Assembly Members and senior representatives of business and the arts.

Shakespeare Schools Festival began life in Pembrokeshire in 2000 and is now recognised as the largest youth drama festival in the UK. To date, the festival has encouraged 90,000 young people aged between 11-18 to unlock their potential on the stage by performing half hour plays in professional theatres.

The event has been made possible by sponsorship from a new supporter of Art @ the Senedd, North Wales based Clogau Gold.

The event begins at 5.30pm in the public area of the Senedd, where light refreshments will be available.

Almost 100 arts and cultural charities from across the UK are taking part in a new fundraising challenge helping to stimulate philanthropy for arts and culture.

These arts organisations are aiming to develop relationships with new givers and they have the potential to leverage additional funds from the Arts & Business Big Arts Give Challenge Fund: £1 from an online donor may be matched pound for pound.

Arts & Business Cymru CultureStep reception

Business and arts partners across North Wales were recognised for their achievements by the Presiding Officer, National Assembly for Wales, at a special reception last Thursday 25 November.

Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas, AM presented Certificates of Excellence to recipients of Arts & Business Cymru’s CultureStep programme. CultureStep invests cash into business / arts partnerships to make them stronger and more sustainable. Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the Arts Council of Wales, the programme is key to fostering and developing relationships between the two sectors, especially at a time of economic gloom.

Since its inception in May 2008, CultureStep has levered £2 million into the arts from business against £272,000 of public money spent – a return of £7.3:£1. The programme, which has invested in all 22 local authority areas of Wales, has also engaged 33,500 young people with the arts and given 20,000 people in the community development opportunities.

Businesses present will range from small family run firms to national and multi national corporations. Arts partners range from individual practitioners through to national Welsh flagship organisations.
Lord Elis Thomas agreed to host the reception at the last minute when the Deputy First Minister of Wales Ieuan Wyn Jones, AM, had to pull out due to ill health.
The CultureStep Reception, sponsored by Peninsula Home Improvements and West Coast Energy, took place at the newly refurbished Mostyn Gallery in Llandudno.

North Wales Culture Step Projects 2009/10

• Camac Harps and Telynau Vining Harps sponsored Canolfan Gerdd William Mathias' International Harp festival in 2009. The businesses wished to enable music and visual art workshops during the festival period. Energy Solutions also supported the festival, widening access to concerts for young aspiring harpists. CultureStep funded workshops for young people on Anglesey during the festival.

• Clogau Gold embarked on its first arts based training course with Clwyd Theatr Cymru. The theatre designed and delivered a 2-day programme for 20 employees which addressed issues of individual responsibility, confidence and ownership, as well as encouraging teamwork and improved communication among employees.

• Dwr Cymru was carrying out major work at its sites near Caernarfon and wished to engage the community and educate young people about water during this time. The business partnered Galeri on a project that brought together local children to create artwork for display on the sites’ porter cabins. Artist Eleri Jones led workshops and the resulting images are now exhibited at the business’ education centre at Alwen.

• Holyhead Boat Yard increased its sponsorship of the Ucheldre Centre in order to support the Cultural Olympiad exhibition, Following the Flame, which will be shown in Holyhead. CultureStep enables 330 primary school children from Anglesey to visit the centre as well as provide them with educational packs and schools workshops.

• HSBC is sponsoring Film Agency for Wales' new Film Club in Prestatyn - an extended learning activity for young people which ties in with the curriculum. CultureStep funds 3 new clubs in the area.

• Blaenau Ffestiniog based Magnox North, a 1st time sponsor, committed substantial sponsorship to the 2009 Bala National Eisteddfod. A&B investment developed outreach arts activities in the run up to the Eisteddfod. A local artist delivered workshops for children in all secondary schools in Meirionydd and Gwynedd.

• Established sponsor Old Bell 3 sponsored Mid Wales Opera in 2010. An educational programme accompanied a production of Falstaff and activities were delivered in collaboration with Theatr Hafren, Theatr Harlech, Glyndwr University and Llandrillo College.

• Pendine Park Care Organisation has embedded music into its current arts provision by creating a Musician-In-Residence project with the Hallé Orchestra. The project evaluation is integral to the long term development of the project and will be used to implement an Arts in Health policy for Pendine Park. CultureStep is supporting two academic evaluators to produce this extensive report.

• Peninsula Home Improvements was refurbishing its Anglesey showroom and wished to use visual art to enhance the new space while offering staff a unique development opportunity. Photographer Katy Morgan worked with staff to create pieces that illustrated the business’ products in unusual settings and demonstrated the skill of the workforce. The resulting images are exhibited in the showroom.

• Betwys y Coed’s Royal Oak Hotel sponsored the Snowdonia Arts Festival in 2010. CultureStep enabled a staff workshop which helped employees understand the exhibitions, enabling them to discuss the art with the community, visitors and hotel guests during the festival.

• Salisbury & Co sponsored the North Wales International Music Festival in 2010 to meet a new staff development objective. CultureStep supported this by funding 2 sessions for 12 staff to participate in a choral workshop, fostering improved team work.

• ScottishPower sponsored the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod’s International Children’s Day for global marketing objectives. CultureStep enabled 200 children from Communities First areas to attend the day, free of charge.

• Caernarfon based Silver Star Holidays opened a Wrexham office and its partnership with Theatr Stiwt helped to raise the profile of the new branch. CultureStep funded writing and print making workshops aimed at the 50+ audience at Stiwt, one of Silver Star’s target markets. Silver Star is also sponsoring the carving of the Bardic Chair for the Wrexham National Eisteddfod 2011 by Bala based, Dilwyn Jones. CultureStep is funding Dilwyn’s work with Glyndwr University. Applied Arts & Craft students will learn how to respond to a commercial brief and make a contribution to the design process.

• West Coast Energy wished to deepen its partnership with Clwyd Theatr Cymru through Creative Training for its senior management team. CultureStep contributed to the costs of a bespoke 6 day course for 8 employees to improve team building and communication skills.

• Newtown based Whittingham Riddell increased its sponsorship of Oriel Davies’ contemporary art competition and exhibition in 2010. Other local businesses Imprint and Newtown Station Travel gave in kind support and CultureStep funded the student prizes.

• First time arts sponsor Willie Jack Dentistry committed to a 3 year deal with Gwyl Gregynog 2010. CultureStep funded a Schools Day and Japan Day. 100 Powys children attended free of charge.

• Windpower Wales sponsored Gwyl Gobaith in 2010 to strengthen its CSR profile due to new wind farm developments in the vicinity. CultureStep funded a pilot training project. Tenor Rhys Meirion delivered 2 sessions using the voice to develop individual & group confidence, communication and teamwork.

Top accolades given to inspirational collaborations between business and arts

HSBC, Travelex, Siemens plc, Ekspan and Sky Arts are among the big business names to be named as this year’s top collaborators with arts at the 32nd Arts & Business Awards. Nine awards were announced at a ceremony attended by the Minister for Culture and 400 leaders in business and the arts, hosted by novelist Kate Mosse, and held at the Museum of London.

Jaguar Land Rover A&B Community & Young People Award

Sheffield engineering firm Ekspan transformed a 15,000 square foot factory into a theatre with Open Door Theatre Company. It is now a fully licensed arts venue hosting a wide range of community projects which involve young people and showcase local talent. The judges applauded the journey for both partners resulting in a long-lasting outcome for the local community. They wanted to recognise the cost effectiveness of the project and the level of engagement with staff and customers as well as the community.

Siemens found a way to improve change management and drive business by working with Hallé. Singing workshops aimed to push employee boundaries and results showed that actual business performance improved. Employees experienced increased confidence and a willingness to stretch themselves. The judges felt this project was imaginative in its design and covered the dynamics between individual and collective performance. They were impressed by the involvement of all parts of business from senior management down. For the arts partner it was an excellent example of widening its business model and deepening engagement with an existing sponsor.

This impressive programme pushed digital and technical boundaries by delivering broadcast theatre live (or as-live) from the stage in London to over 300 cinemas in the UK and around the world. Travelex, long-time sponsors of National Theatre, helped make NT Live a reality as well as supporting the global transactions. The judges felt that this was a partnership in the truest sense, with a very innovative range of collaborative activity and campaign platforms. They felt it closely met all of the criteria for the category – breaking new markets and attracting new audiences. In addition, the partnership had very clear and quantifiable objectives for both partners, which were not only met, but exceeded.

Their support of the British Museum’s Indian Summer programme reached 2.78 million people and 5,000 HSBC customers internationally across the UK, India, Australia, the USA and the UAE. They judges felt this was a true partnership, where both organisations extensively leveraged the sponsorship to extend their brand reputation in an international market. It demonstrated true global impact with clear measures of success.

During his two years as Chair of The Broadway John ensured the rise of a much needed cultural outlet in Barking. He brought in a new Artistic Director / CEO, steered in a new brand and helped diversify their funding base. A 30% increase in Black, ethnic minority and refugee audiences and participation is one key success of his tenure. The judges were impressed by John’s personal commitment, enthusiasm and leadership style. He clearly exercised judgement about when to intervene, when to step back and when to take calculated risks.

Recipients The Simon Hornby Award

Sir Simon Hornby, chairman of Arts & Business from 9 years from 1989 to 1997, passed away earlier this year. He was a strong and vocal advocate for business engagement in the arts. This special Award, with the support of Lady Hornby, goes to a business that has, continuously placed culture at its heart. The A&B Simon Hornby was awarded to Sky Arts as an organisation that is focused on changing and advancing the relationship of business and the arts.

Labour Shadow Culture Minister Ivan Lewis said: "We must not let a dark shadow fall across our cultural world. The Prince of Wales philanthropy medal is a fantastic way to thank and profile those individuals who do so much to balance the UK’s delicate funding ecology. We always need to celebrate and recognise passionate people who make significant contributions to our cultural life. Arts & Business has created a special and unique award that goes to people whose generosity and philanthropy enrich the lives of millions.”

The five honourees were selected after an extensive decision making process. The Prince of Wales’ Arts Advisory Group drew up a short list of twenty philanthropists which went forward to a final judging panel of artists, who chose the first five honourees. The final panel consisted of Sir Ronald Harwood (writer for stage and screen), Dame Monica Mason (Director of The Royal Ballet) and Christopher Le Brun (artist). The medal was first presented in 2008.

Arts & Business Cymru Awards 2011 - Celebrating creativity and excellence in partnerships between business and the arts

Brief for Awards

The Arts & Business Cymru Awards exist to encourage, acknowledge and celebrate exemplary partnerships between business and the arts across Wales. A high quality and high profile event, the 18th ceremony takes place at Wales Millennium Centre on Tuesday 12 July 2011.

Arts & Business wishes to commission 10 awards which will be presented to the winners of the various categories. An all inclusive fee of £3,000 VAT will be paid for this commission.

Proposals must be submitted in writing and incorporate drawing(s) of the award no later than Friday 17 December 2010.

Philanthropy refers to all forms of support that individuals offer the arts, including membership, friends schemes, donations, major gifts and legacies. Arts & Business’ research shows 90% of individual giving is at low to mid level. Whatever the size of investment, individuals can make a huge difference to the arts.

Wales & West Utilities gets to 'Act Now'... - Arts & Business

A&B Cymru leads the way in enabling the arts to deliver tailored and unique development opportunities to business. Arts Based Training addresses areas that the arts are naturally highly competent in, such as communication and presentation skills, team work, unlocking creativity and managing change. This type of training enjoys huge success and is in ever increasing demand from the private sector.

Newport based company Wales & West Utilities recently embarked on its first creative training experience. Using theatre techniques, Act Now Creative Training designed and delivered a course to improve customer care. Wales & West Utilities joined A&B Cymru in 2009 and, following an analysis of the business’ needs, a pilot training project was brokered, delivered by Act Now Creative Training.

The course, which was co-funded by A&B Cymru’s CultureStep Investment Programme, developed 12 staff members’ approach to customer care. Techniques that are crucial for actors to succeed were used to enhance interpersonal skills, foster confidence and positivity, enable a greater awareness of personal impact, instil a shared customer focused culture and develop a more creative approach.

Company Chief Executive, Graham Edwards, was enthusiastic about the project:
"This was a complete departure from our usual training and development programme. Frankly, we were a little nervous about it but the pilot was a huge success and a full programme of training has now been booked with Act Now".

The company has also become a proactive arts sponsor and sees the sector as an effective way of engaging with communities across Wales.

Ymunodd Wales & West Utilities, â Chelfyddydau & Busnes Cymru yn 2009, ac yn dilyn dadansoddiad o anghenion y busnes, cychwynnwyd prosiect hyfforddi peilot, wedi’i gyflwyno gan Act Now Creative Training.

Llwyddodd y cwrs, a gafodd ei gyd-ariannu gan Raglen Fuddsoddi CultureStep Celfyddydau & Busnes Cymru, i ddatblygu ymagwedd 12 aelod o staff ar gyfer gofal cwsmeriaid. Defnyddiwyd technegau sy’n hanfodol i actorion lwyddo i wella sgiliau rhyngbersonol, magu hyder a natur gadarnhaol, galluogi ymwybyddiaeth well o effaith bersonol, meithrin diwylliant ar y cyd sy’n canolbwyntio ar y cwsmer a datblygu ymagwedd fwy creadigol.

Roedd Prif Weithredwr y Cwmni, Graham Edwards, yn frwdfrydig ynglŷn â’r prosiect: "Roedd hyn yn gwbl wahanol i’n rhaglen hyfforddi a datblygu arferol. The Arts & Business Cymru Awards encourages, acknowledges and celebrates exemplary partnerships between business and the arts across Wales. Since its inception in 1993, the ceremony has grown in both size and stature, to become one of Wales’ most popular events.

The evening attracts senior representatives of business, the arts, the media and public life in Wales and is recognised as an ideal opportunity for businesses to extend hospitality to their chosen guests.

In 2011, the Awards will be held at Wales Millennium Centre for the 7th year. The dinner, which takes place on Tuesday 12 July, will be hosted on the stage. The black tie event will begin with a drinks reception and the ceremony will be presented bilingually. Winning businesses will receive an award specially commissioned from a Wales based artist. Many well known personalities will be present and the evening will be interspersed with live performances.

The Awards will be launched at WMC during a breakfast event on Tuesday 8 February 2011, where details of the ceremony will be announced.

New growth for business investment in culture found in the evolution of digital partnerships

On the eve of the Chancellor’s CSR announcement and anticipated budget cuts to the cultural sector, a new research report by Arts & Business has identified how the arts can own a special value in a digital world – one that can drive business investment and engagement.

The report identifies that convergence between creative technology, the arts and brands is opening up huge opportunities in the UK’s digital cultural landscape and recommends that these sectors must join forces to attract additional new investment.

The Report recommends that the impact of digital collaborations on future arts and business partnerships could be a significant area of growth. The pioneering research by Arts & Business offers ideas on these types of partnerships and ‘a how to guide’ on how to develop them; exploring the nature of these innovative partnerships, the benefits, the pitfalls and real life success stories from across the UK.

The report concludes that the level of transparency that the digital world has opened up has stretched the communications industry and created a fantastic opportunity for the arts industry to help businesses connect and innovate in a much more impactful way.
