Record year for acquisitions to Tate Collection

Arts & Business says ...

"We are delighted that the generosity of a number of patrons has meant that the Tate has defied the recession to record an astonishingly successful year. Generations of future visitors will continue to benefit from the richness of this legacy.

Arts & Business marketplace analysis, to be published on Monday, however suggests that the Tate’s experience is not representative of the rest of the arts and cultural sector.

In the last year, the economic crisis has radically altered the commercial and cultural landscape in the UK and although our sector has responded dynamically 70% of cultural organisations within London are now seeing a decrease in private sector investment.

The UK arts and cultural sector is a key driver of the economy and Arts & Business will continue to lobby the government and private funders support the arts. The prosperity of London, and the whole of the UK, relies significantly on the health of our cultural landscape."

At a press conference on 17 September 2009, on the publication of its Annual Report 2008/9 and presentation of its future programme, Tate announced it had a record year for acquisitions to the Tate Collection. It also announced an increased focus on working with regional and international partners with a record number of loans to other organisations.

The total value of works acquired for the Collection in 2008/9 was £96.7 million, thanks to the generosity of artists and collectors, gifts and bequests worth in excess of £64 million.

Nicholas Serota, Director Tate, commented:
“It is remarkable that, despite the current economic climate, the spirit of philanthropy remains undiminished. Tate has been extremely fortunate to benefit from many exceptional gifts over the past year. We must make sure that our current visitors and future generations gain from the richness of the legacy that this generosity provides.”
