The opportunity
How is digital technology changing art practice? How are the capabilities of different sectors converging because of technology? These are some of the themes explored in ‘Decode: Digital Design Sensations’ exhibition, developed by the Victoria and Albert Museum in partnership with SAP, a leading provider of business software.
The exhibition is an example of innovation as digital technology is fully embraced by one of the UK’s national cultural institutions. SAP was looking for a new and creative platform to promote its new brand strategy. The ability to analyse data and interpret it to engage users is a process shared by the arts and SAP, and is therefore the ethos of the designs featured in Decode.
The impact
The strength of both partners’ shared vision enabled the V&A to present the first exhibition of its type, showcasing cutting-edge developments in digital and interactive design, whilst embodying its business partner’s objectives. This was highlighted in a specially commissioned piece by Julius Popp, entitled ‘bit.code’ which comprises binary code systems to track and display the most popular words taken from web feeds, made with the help of SAP’s consultancy and software. The partnership is an excellent example of a brand taking full advantage of digital trends by communicating its products and its business strategy.
