George Osborne MP

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Member of Parliament for Tatton

George was born in London in May 1971. He was educated at St Paul's School, London, and at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he read modern history. At Oxford, he was joint editor of the University magazine Isis. He went on to be a Dean Rusk scholar at Davidson College, North Carolina.

After a short spell as a freelance journalist, George joined the Conservative Research Department in 1994. From 1995-97, he was the Special Adviser at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and worked in the Political Office at 10, Downing Street. From 1997-2001, George was Political Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition and Secretary to the Shadow Cabinet.

George was elected as the Member of Parliament for Tatton, Cheshire, in June 2001. Winning with a majority of 8,611, he became the youngest Conservative MP in the House of Commons. He was re-elected in May 2005 with a majority of 11,731.

After serving on the Public Accounts Committee, in September 2004, George was appointed as the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury and served as the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer from May 2005 to April 2010.

In May 2010, he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer.

George is married to the writer Frances Osborne, author of Lilla's Feast (Doubleday, 2006) and The Bolter (Virago, 2008). They have two young children and they live in London and Cheshire.
